Sermorelin is a biologically active analogue of growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH), which is produced by the human brain to prompt the pituitary gland to produce and release growth hormone. It encourages the body to synthesize its own human growth hormone (HGH). As a truncated version of the growth hormone-releasing factor (GRF 1-44) naturally produced in the brain, it stimulates the pituitary's production and secretion of HGH. In younger individuals, there is a plentiful supply of GHRH, enabling the pituitary gland to release sufficient growth hormone necessary for maintaining health, vitality, and other normal physiological functions. However, GHRH levels diminish with age, resulting in decreased production and release of HGH from the pituitary, which increases the consequences associated with growth hormone deficiency.

In contrast to HGH, Sermorelin targets a more fundamental issue within the GH neuroendocrine axis, exhibits more physiological activity, has an improved safety profile, and is not subject to restrictions regarding its use for adult hormone deficiencies. While Sermorelin offers similar benefits on body composition and other advantages associated with HGH, it also provides additional significant benefits. The effects of Sermorelin are controlled at the pituitary gland level through negative feedback mechanisms and somatostatin release, thereby minimizing or completely avoiding safety concerns linked to HGH overdoses. The release of HGH triggered by the pituitary under the influence of Sermorelin occurs in an episodic manner rather than in a continuous "square wave" pattern, which helps prevent tachyphylaxis by reflecting normal physiological processes. By stimulating the pituitary, Sermorelin sustains more of the growth hormone neuroendocrine axis, which is the first to decline with aging.
